Mobile Massage at Maui Westin Ka’anapali Resort Villas

Yesterday I had the opportunity to learn that the service I am providing is finding it’s target audience.  The conversation with my client after the session reinforced my belief (and let me know I am not crazy for thinking this way) that there is a large part of the population uninterested in the added “fluff” of spa treatments and are simply looking for a focused bodywork session to help them work out the kinks.

After the Deep Circulatory/Sports Massage I provided in room at the Westin Villas Ka’anapali my client thanked me and explained how he had found me (much gratitude to the Internet gods from me).  First he checked out a couple of flyers of the various Lahaina Spas and read through the menus of scrubs, treatments, aromatherapy, flowers, candles etc. —- which  are great if that is what one is looking for and enjoys.

My client, on the other hand was not interested in all the charges for that extra “(*^@#)” he said.  So, he got on the internet and did a search for (he didn’t remember exatly what words he used) something like mobile therapeutic massage Lahaina and found me.

Once he read on my site that in order to be effective the therapeutic massage need not be bone crushingly painful he picked up the phone and dialed to make an appointment.  You see,  I myself am experiencing extreme difficulty finding massage therapists on Maui who understand and work with the following Physiology Law and how they apply to massage.

“*Arndt-Schultz Law
Weak stimuli activate physiological processes; very strong stimuli inhibit physiological processes

Applications – Use gentler methods that are slower or less stimulating to activate physiological responses.  Doing deep tissue slowly and gently is more effective than using force.  Tissue that is gently agitate will heal faster than tissue that is left alone.  Weak stimulus activates tissue growth and wound healing.”  Bodyworker.com

I call this riding the edge.

As my client said, you need to warm up the body first and then go deep to be effective.  The body has a pain response for a reason and if it’s hurting too much then it can NOT be good for you.  I agree.  I try to work just below the level of “ouch that’s too much, can you go a little lighter please.”  Unless of course the client is one of the few who feel that they need to experience extreme pain while receiving a Massage — which I will never understand. – Then hey by all means I can crush you, but work with you on a regular basis this way, probably not.  As I told my client I don’t practice “Extreme Massage.”

He laughed and told me a story of how his stepson was trying to recommend a Massage therapist to him in Texas.  The stepson was going on and on about how deep and painful the massage was and that when he went home he threw up after it.  ”No Way!” My client told him, “That is ridiculous.” I agree.

Get Married on Maui, but first get a Massage

As the owner and soul provider of service for www.MauiOutCallMassage.com I have had the pleasure of working with many people who have come to Maui in order to have their wedding ceremony here.

Most of the groups I have worked with were renting a large house for the entire wedding party and family to stay in.  A large portion of these houses were up Launiupoko in Lahaina (which is where these photos were taken).

The houses are beautiful, spacious and all come breathtaking views.  Why would you want to schlep everyone off to one of the luxurious spas along the coast for your pre or post bridal massage or bodywork treatments?

To me it makes much more sense to stay put in the luxurious house you have rented, receive your session outside near the pool or on one of the shady lanais.  When your session is finished you can make your way to the hot tub, pool, lounge chair (or hammock) without interrupting the relaxing state you are now in.

The real estate in Launiupoko is one of my favorites.  It’s peaceful and still with a captivating view of the ocean and Lanai and the rentals aren’t just for wedding parties either.

Beachside Massage in Kaanapali, Maui

Beautiful Day for a Massage by the Beach

This was such a lovely location to give a massage outside next to the ocean.  Rather than stay inside Pat chose to have her massage outside on the grass, in the shade, listening to the waves crash on the beach in Ka’anapali.  Not a bad location huh?

I get to meet the nicest people providing Mobile Massage and Bodywork on Maui – Steve and Pat are two of my favorites.  It’s rewarding to be able to help people relax on their vacation to the Valley Isle but even more rewarding to help people do something nice for each other.  Steve surprised his wife with a beachside massage while they were vacationing on Maui – and he took some great photos too!

Rolfing in Canada Rolf Method on Maui

A visitor traveling to Maui from Canada contacted me prior to his trip to see if I could do session 6 of the Ida Rolf 10 Series of Structural Integration while he was on vacation in Kihei.  He was currently working with a Rolfer in Edmonton and didn’t want to miss his weekly session while he was on Maui.  His Rolfer went on-line to find someone who was doing the same Ida Rolf Method of Structural Integration he was doing and found me.

This is when the field of bodywork gets interesting and fun to be involved with.  When the ego takes a back seat and the practitioners of the work realize that they are not the ones creating any magical changes for anyone.  The changes come from the person on the table and the power of the work itself, especially the powerful 10 session Recipe which Ida Rolf was led to develop so long ago.  No matter which school you studied at, The Rolf Institute or The Guild for Structural Integration, as long as you learned the Ida Rolf original 10 session Recipe the work will be similar.

I don’t know the Edmonton Rolfer but believe he and I must share similar ideas about the 10 session Recipe.  The Recipe is powerful and if you stick to the system of the Recipe the changes will occur.  He trusted me to deliver session 6 which in turn will set him up for session 7 when his client returns from his Maui vacation.

“I saw Laura while in Maui, while on vacation. I have been taking a series of neuromuscular treatments known as rolfing, and I contacted her because she did something very similar – neuromuscular treatments known as the Rolf Method of Structural Integration. I don’t understand the politics but found her treatment great.  She worked on my legs and my back. Her treatment has relieved my limp, and helped relieved my back strain. I would recommend her to anyone in the Maui area.  She also provided massages for two of my daughters and my wife. All were thrilled – my wife said this is the best massage she’s had in years.” Dr. Barry Lycka

It was wonderful to do session 6 with Barry and experience just how powerful the Recipe is.  Dr. Lycka is finding that the Ida Rolf 10 sessions is helping him recover from chronic muscle contracture in two of his limbs and in only 5 sessions prior to our meeting has noticed a marked difference in the muscle strength and mobility of his right arm and leg.

Ida Rolf had this to say about the Rolf Method of Structural Integration, “This is the gospel of Rolfing: When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through.  Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”

Barry Nutter Rolfing Video KGMB TV Channel 9 Honolulu, Hawaii

I am always so impressed when a friend of mine is featured in the press promoting the work they do and have spent years perfecting.  I have mentioned Dr. Barry Nutter in a previous post when I met him at a Four Handed Rolf Method Class on Kauai and am happy to share a link to a video which featured him on the Honolulu, HI news http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpNfuxzvWkA&feature=youtu.be

I learned a tremendous amount from him by his being in the class and am so happy he took the time to be interviewed and spread the word about the important bodywork Dr. Ida Rolf spent her life sharing with others.

In her book “Rolfing and the Physical Reality” Ida Rolf had this to say about the work, “Rolfing does not “cure” symptoms.  The goal of Rolfing is a more resilient, higher energy system.  The organism then is itself better able to defend against illness and overcome stress, and the greater energy does its own beneficial work in healing and relaxing.  Rolfing does not achieve perfection; it begins a process.  Its goal is to establish balance in gravity.  The ten-hour cycle is a first step in that direction.  Rolfing is an on going process that continues long after the work has been completed.  Bodies have a natural liking for comfort, ease and uprightness.  Insofar as they can experience it, they try to live in a place of balance.  In this place, the energy of gravity can flow with (not counter to) the energy of the individual.  Rolfing is a way of restructuring the physical body.”

As I work with several people through the 10 session Rolf Method of Structural Integration on Maui I see changes occur in their bodies as each session builds upon the next and allows balance to settle into their systems.  This process is powerful and continues long after the sessions have ended.  With every person I work with I can see and feel more and more what Ida Rolf was talking about and understand how she was drawn to continue deeper and deeper into the exploration of this work.

Reflexology/CranioSacral sessions in Kihei, Maui

Lately I have been working with a woman staying at Kalama Heights Retirement Community in Kihei, Maui.  I admire her for acknowledging the fact that as we get in our later years living within a group of people with similar goals and interests is most likely a better option than dealing with the regular upkeep of a house and property.  She has begun her search by staying a month at Kalama Heights http://www.holidaytouch.com/Our-Communities/kalama-heights.aspx/ and will continue to search until she finds the perfect place.

It is wonderful that Kalama Heights offers monthly rates to seniors wishing to come visit Maui for vacation or as in her case to check out the facility and possibly make it their new home.

She is very young for her calendar years, active and realizes that Bodywork is really more health oriented rather than just a luxury.

The sessions we have been doing in Kihei, Maui are a combination of Foot Reflexology and CranioSacral Therapy.  She is reporting much relief and noticeable difference from the sessions.  And I, as always, am learning much from her through the sessions.  The sessions with her are leading me deeper into studying CranioSacral Therapy and how profound its effects are with very subtle movements.

Skull bones

The skull/cranium is one of the main (not only) areas touched in a CranioSacral Therapy session.  By gently, using 5 grams of force, touching the individual bones of the Cranium they are allowed to breathe which in turn allows a freer flow of Cerebral Spinal Fluid and ultimately release fascial restrictions along the spinal membranes.  The brain and spinal cord are command centers, by using CranioSacral Therapy we target the brain and spinal cord allowing huge changes to be made in an individual’s entire body system.

The more I work with CranioSacral Therapy on Maui the more I fall in love with the modality.  Its effective while at the same time feeling wonderful.  I offer a little more explanation on my web-site http://www.mauioutcallmassage.com/

As a bodyworker on Maui I recognize that I need the work in order to deliver excellent work to my clients.  So as I search for a therapist to receive CranioSacral Therapy from in Makawao or any other UpCountry location I am finding it difficult to find someone to book with for this week but will continue to search and receive this wonderful work myself.

A massage client on Maui asks me about Rolfing

I am always so impressed when I have Massage clients tell me that their Medical Doctor or Chiropractor has suggested that they look into getting the Ida Rolf Method of Structural Integration (often referred to as “Rolfing”).  I am happy to tell them what I have learned through my studies at the Guild for Structural Integration and if they are visiting Maui I guide them in how to find a Certified Rolf Practitioner (often called “Rolfers”) when they get home.

Last week I was able to give a tourist on Maui visiting from Australia a sample of session one and two (with the understanding that it would be in his best interest to get the full 10 sessions from a Certified Rolf Practitioner).  He loved the work and went on-line to www.RolfGuild.org and was easily able to find a practitioner in his home town of Adelaide.  He said it was different than other forms of Bodywork he had experienced and was eager to get the full 10 session Recipe.

Today a  client asked me about The Rolf Method (he actually said “Rolfing”), his chiropractor in Kansas had suggested he look into.   No doubt he will be able to find a practitioner at home.

I started wondering how many people in the Medical Community were actually suggesting this work to patients and if I could start finding some articles of endorsement – I googled and found quite a few actually.  The first one I thought I’d share is from Andrew Weil M.D.

Four Reasons to Try Rolfing by Dr. Andrew Weil   January 6th, 2010

Do you suffer from chronic stress, pain or bad posture? You may want to consider Rolfing.   Named after Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Rolfing is often referred to as “structural integration.” It is not simply massage, it is a system of deep manipulation of the connective tissues that aims to restructure the fascia (the sheath of tissue that surrounds a muscle) and relieve physical misalignment.

Basic Rolfing consists of a series of 10 sessions, each focusing on a different part of the body. The practitioner applies firm, and sometimes even painful, pressure via fingers and elbows. The result? You may become more in touch with your body, experience less pain and stress, improve your posture, even release repressed emotions and diminish habitual muscle tension. People who have experienced Rolfing often find an improvement in their professional and daily activities.

I am happy to be able to offer the Rolf Method of Structural Integration to residents and extended stay visitors on Maui and even more so to be able to educate and spread the word about how valuable this work can be to ones health and well-being.
I frequently visit some of my colleagues web-sites to see what articles and news they are coming across as well and highly recommend them as Rolf Practitioners.  http://rolfguildkauai.com/ Ken Solin, http://www.rolfmethodmaui.com/ Carter Evans or mine http://mauioutcallmassage.com/ are a few sites you may want to check out for more information on the Rolf Method of Structural Integration.
